Bad News

Well, I had a follow up visit with my doctor from roughly a month and a half. I got some results on my bloodwork. Well, my iron levels are low to the point where it's not good and it can put a strain on my heart and my body (borderline getting a blood transfusion). I also found out my A and D levels are pretty low as well. The good news was my hormones and thyroid where doing well, but I know that being anemic and running is gonna be a little tough on my heart. So, I need to bring up my levels which is going to be very tough for me. I'm highly allergic to sulfur, anything I eat or take that turns into Sulfur dioxide ( I can't even have onions, garlic or pork) I can not have and most iron supplements because are sulfur based. It's been a bit of a struggle for the last few years, but now I know with running and training it's critical it get my iron levels up so I don't strain my heart. If anyone has any suggestions besides the Floridex (which I've tried) I can get all the help I can get. Well wish me luck, I figured I rest today and do a run tommorrow, wish me luck.

Wow, that is tough! I don't have any suggestions.

Run well tomorrow and go easy in the heat! That will strain you even more. Be sure to walk as much as you need to....and take your cell phone with you :-)

Oh Tammy, I'm so sorry to hear the news. I was anemic for a while in college but did not have any problems (that I know of) using regular iron supplements despite having some sensitivity to sulfur dioxide foods. Is eating more iron-rich food like red meats, dark green leafy veggies, etc. possible for you? That was recommended to me as well as iron supplements.
